This week’s Newsgram covers a wide swath of topics, and the first is the release of the new Department of Defense Instruction (DoDI) 1300.17, Religious Liberty in the Military Services. If you have not yet read it, I commend it to you for doing so.
The second item is an update about the Veteran/Military Friendly Congregations (VMFC), a program we promote along with two of our strategic partners, Tennessee Vet to Vet Tennessee, and The Brotherhood of St. Andrew. In the past four week we have had five congregations join the program, Reid Temple AME Church, Glenn Dale, MD; Immanuel UCC, Lafayette, IN; St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Del Mar, CA; All Saints Episcopal Church, Vista, CA and Good Samaritan Episcopal Church, San Diego, CA.
This is the largest burst of activity we have had in quite some time and you may have noticed that the last three listed are Episcopal congregations. The reason for this is that in the summer, the Senior Vice President for The Brotherhood of St. Andrew, Mr. Jack Henstein, visited the diocesan conference in it’s virtual format and met with the newly created Military Liaison for the Diocese of Los Angeles, a position created by the new Bishop of Los Angeles, The Rt. Rev. Susan Snook. Thanks to this meeting-and the intentionality of Bp Snook in creating the position-we now have three new members of the VMFC program. It’s amazing what can happen with such laser focus as this. You see an article elsewhere in this Newsgram with more specifics about each of the congregations.
